A Birmingham woman experienced a bizarre carjacking on Wednesday night when a thief stole the Uber vehicle in which she was travelling while she was still inside.
The incident began around 9:35pm on April 8 at the Shell petrol station on Harborne Lane.
Instead of a high-speed chase or a confrontation, the passenger described a surreal interaction with the criminal. The thief drove her to a nearby bus stop and instructed her to leave the vehicle. Before she stepped out, he offered her a friendly gesture.
"Strangely, the thief just calmly drove me to a bus stop and told me to go," the passenger told BirminghamLive. "He then fist-bumped me as if I was his best mate. Really strange. He said he'd just left prison."
The woman credited her safety to remaining composed during the ordeal, noting that she spoke to the man "calmly" throughout the short journey.
However, she expressed frustration with the local authorities following her release, claiming: "The police didn't give me a lift home and were more interested in recovering the stolen vehicle."
Now safe, the passenger is urging others to be "mindful" and vigilant against car theft at gas stations. She advised drivers to "avoid leaving keys in the ignition" and to "lock car doors when going to pay."
West Midlands Police has confirmed it is investigating the theft and has already recovered the vehicle for forensic testing.
