A local taxi driver has condemned Darlington Borough Council’s decision to scrap its taxi marshal scheme, warning that public safety is at risk after the wardens reportedly broke up three fights on their final shift.
Gavin Ellis, 65, described the move to end the service last weekend as "short-sighted," arguing that the marshals have been essential in protecting both drivers and passengers from violence.
The scheme was launched in 2021 to manage busy town centre queues and protect vulnerable people during the late-night rush.
Mr. Ellis highlighted the vital role the marshals played until the very end, stating: "Ironically, on their last night, they split at least three potential fights up."
He shared concerns that without them, disorder will increase, noting: "Those marshals have been a godsend to the taxi trade, helping us with unscrupulous customers, stopping queue jumping and breaking up fights."
The council defended the move, citing a change in nightlife habits and a drop in funding.
Councillor Jim Garner explained that while the marshals did good work, “with the change in habits, less demand at taxi ranks, alongside reduced funding, we felt now was the time to bring the initiative to a close.”
Officials pointed out that the town still holds a "Purple Flag" safety award and features other security measures like CCTV help buttons and police patrols.
However, the taxi trade remains unconvinced. Mr. Ellis, who unsuccessfully tried to launch a petition to save the roles, recalled past incidents where marshals prevented serious harm and even saved a life.
Expressing his fear for the future of the Grange Road rank, he said: "I sincerely hope somebody's son or daughter does not become a victim of this short-sighted decision."
