A Coventry taxi driver has been left permanently disfigured after a man bit his ear during a violent late-night road rage confrontation.
Shane Hurley, 41, avoided immediate jail after pleading guilty to assaulting taxi driver Mohammed Hanan in an attack so severe the victim required stitches.
The incident happened at around 1am on 23 December 2022 as Mr Hanan was driving home following his taxi shift.
The two men met on a narrow road lined with parked vehicles that lacked sufficient space for both cars to pass. Hurley began shouting at Mr Hanan to reverse his taxi, triggering a five-minute argument between the drivers.
The row rapidly escalated when Hurley got out of his vehicle and confronted the driver. He leaned inside the taxi and struck Mr Hanan before climbing fully into the vehicle to bite him on the ear.
Mr Hanan required multiple stitches at hospital, but the wound subsequently became infected and left his ear permanently disfigured.
Speaking about the impact of the attack, Mr Hanan explained that the injury makes it painful to sleep on that side and has left him feeling "uneasy" about continuing his work as a taxi driver.
The assault also forced Mr Hanan off work throughout December and January, resulting in approximately £3,000 in lost earnings. As the sole provider for his household, the loss of income caused significant financial distress for his family.
At Warwick Crown Court, Judge Kristina Montgomery condemned the assault as "wholly unacceptable." The court heard in mitigation that Hurley had previously served in the British Army and had been diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.
Hurley was sentenced to a 20-month suspended prison sentence and ordered to pay £3,000 in compensation to Mr Hanan to cover his financial losses.
