An Uber driver is on trial accused of murdering a passenger following an argument after the man was sick inside his car.
Basildon Crown Court heard that Michael Ashton, 28, pictured, had been out for dinner and drinks with his partner before the couple ordered an Uber home to Langdon Hills, Essex, in September 2025.
The court was told that Ashton vomited in the back of the vehicle shortly before they arrived home.
Prosecutors say an argument then broke out between Ashton and the driver, Hayadulla Turkmani, 53, who denies murder.
A neighbour told the court he saw two men shouting at each other before allegedly seeing the car accelerate towards Ashton at “incredible speed”.
The witness claimed Ashton was driven over before the vehicle stopped, reversed a short distance and then moved forward again. He said he could hear what sounded like Ashton being dragged along the ground.
Ashton’s partner told the court the argument had become “really heated” and said she later realised her partner was underneath the car. She immediately called an ambulance.
Ashton sadly died from his injuries eight days later.
However, the defence has questioned witnesses’ recollection of events, with the court also hearing that one witness initially told police the driver may not have realised Ashton was underneath the vehicle.
Turkmani denies murder. The trial continues.
All allegations remain subject to the ongoing court proceedings
