Mohammad Yasin, the MP for Bedford and Kempston, has written to Mayor Tom Wootton demanding an urgent explanation over persistent delays in issuing and renewing taxi licences.
The MP highlighted that the backlog is inflicting serious financial hardship on local drivers who rely on their licences to earn a living, while also disrupting the operations of local taxi firms.
Writing on Facebook, Mr Yasin revealed that affected drivers, businesses, and constituents had raised serious concerns about the council's processing times.
On Tuesday 13 October, he formally wrote to Mayor Wootton insisting on a "substantive response". In his letter, Mr Yasin stated: "These delays are causing uncertainty and financial difficulties for drivers who rely on their licences to work, while taxi companies have raised concerns about the impact on their ability to operate effectively."
The MP questioned whether the lag was caused by recent staffing changes within the licensing department or budget decisions impacting the service.
While acknowledging the importance of proper safety checks, Mr Yasin stressed that drivers deserve clarity and a definite timetable for improvement.
He wrote: "I recognise the need for appropriate checks to ensure licences are issued safely and in line with the relevant requirements. However, drivers need to know where they stand, particularly when delays affect their ability to earn a living.
"I would appreciate a clear update on what has caused the problem and how the council intends to resolve it."
