Cumberland Council has launched a public consultation regarding proposed changes to maximum fares for hackney carriages operating across the region.
The initiative aims to strike a balance between running costs for taxi operators and affordability for local passengers.
Under the proposed Tariff 1, between 6am and midnight, the initial charge for any distance up to one mile is set at £4.50. For journeys exceeding one mile, passengers will be charged £0.50 for each subsequent fifth of a mile or uncompleted part thereof. Waiting time under the standard rate will be charged at £0.35 per minute or part minute.
Increased rates will apply during late-night hours and statutory holidays. Tariff 2 adds a 50 per cent surcharge to Tariff 1 rates for hirings between midnight and 6am on weekdays and weekends, as well as all day on bank and public holidays, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.
Tariff 3 applies a 100 per cent surcharge - doubling the standard Tariff 1 rate - from midnight to midnight on Christmas Day and New Year’s Day.
The proposal also outlines additional fixed fees for extra passengers, items and vehicle fouling.
A charge of £1 will apply for each adult passenger aged 17 and over in excess of four. A 50p fee will be charged for each item of luggage carried outside the passenger compartment.
Finally, drivers will be permitted to charge passengers up to £100 if a vehicle is soiled.
The consultation officially opened on October 9, with local residents, business owners, licensed drivers and taxi operators invited to share their feedback.
