MAN CHARGED AFTER TAXI DRIVER STRANGLED AND ROBBED IN CARLTON, NOTTS

A suspect has been charged after a taxi driver was strangled and robbed while working in Carlton, Notts.

The terrifying assault took place around 9:50pm on 28 April 2026, while the victim was driving a customer along Carlton Hill Road.

Following a disagreement inside the vehicle, the driver pulled the car over. At that moment, the passenger reportedly strangled the driver from behind and snatched a bag of coins from the taxi's central console.

As the driver desperately attempted to drive away to escape, the passenger continued to grip his throat, causing the vehicle to spin out of control. Once the car stopped, both men got out, with the driver fleeing on foot and the passenger running away with the taxi's cash float.

Police arrested and charged 33-year-old Joshua Campbell, of no fixed address, with robbery, intentional strangulation, and causing danger to road users.

Mr. Campbell appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 19 May 2026, where he was remanded in custody. He is scheduled to make his next appearance at Nottingham Crown Court on 16 June 2026.

Detectives condemned the violence and hoped the swift arrest would comfort the victim.

Detective Constable Andre Foster, of Nottinghamshire Police, said: “This must’ve been a terrifying ordeal for the taxi driver, who was just trying to do his job when this happened."

He added that the police take these offences extremely seriously, stating: "Robbery in itself is an incredibly serious offence, which is only intensified still further when violence is added in. This type of behaviour cannot be allowed to go unchecked.

"We’ve now charged a suspect in connection with this incident and hope this update, which we’ve shared with the victim, provides them with a degree of reassurance.”
