A fleet of taxis will parade through Herne Bay to honour Jennifer Everrett, a beloved local driver known as the "Queen of Taxis," who has passed away at the age of 76.
On July 30, six vehicles from Herne Cars will form a funeral procession from her home to Herne Bay Crematorium to pay tribute to a woman remembered as a local legend, a dedicated mother, and one of the funniest cabbies to ever drive the local streets.
Everrett began her career in the mid-1980s, first working as a telephone operator before getting behind the wheel as a single mother to support her two sons.
Over nearly 40 years, she is estimated to have transported more than 100,000 passengers. She only retired last October at the age of 75 because she loved the social aspect of the job too much to stop earlier.
Her eldest son, Matthew, recalled his mother's sharp wit, noting she used to joke: "All of my customers bring me joy and happiness – some by getting in the taxi, and some by getting out."
Known for her vibrant personality, Everrett preferred working night shifts so she could chat with younger passengers. Anita Jarvis, the owner of Herne Cars, remembered her fondly, saying: "Jen was the funniest, craziest taxi driver ever. She was loved by all the customers and was always smiling and laughing."
After late shifts, she liked to unwind with a cup of tea and episodes of her favorite sci-fi shows, Star Trek and Doctor Who.
Beyond her work, Everrett was celebrated for her generous spirit, frequently helping friends with home DIY and farm chores, and forming exceptionally close bonds with her neighbours. She was diagnosed with lung cancer shortly before Mother’s Day and passed away on July 9 at Pilgrims Hospice in Canterbury, surrounded by her family.
In an emotional tribute shared online, Herne Cars wrote: "Anyone that knew Jen knows she had the biggest heart, made us smile and laugh, and was a pillar of Herne Cars. She is gonna be so very missed."
PHTM sends sincere condolences to the family, friends and colleagues of Jennifer.
