A Sheffield taxi driver who spent years grabbing unhealthy food on the go between fares has turned her life around, losing over five stone after hitting a breaking point while shopping.
Shermaine "Sham" Bond, 38, has worked in the taxi industry for more than two decades and spent the last seven years driving cabs, where long hours behind the wheel, sitting all day, and irregular meal times caused her weight to climb to 14st 6lbs.
She struggled with constant thoughts about food and cycled through countless failed diets. "When working long shifts or as a taxi driver, you never know where you will be at any time," Bond said. "It’s not often you get close to home, so convenience always wins."
Her breaking point arrived when she went shopping for shorts and realized she had reached a size 18. "It was a real wake up call," Bond said. "It wasn’t really about the shorts themselves, it was the moment I realised how much my weight had gradually affected my life and my confidence. I remember thinking ‘is this it? Is this how things are going to stay?’"
Seeking support rather than a quick fix, Bond began taking the weight-loss medication Mounjaro in October 2024. She has since lost 5st 5lb, bringing her weight down to 9st 1lb.
The biggest transformation for Bond was the sudden silencing of her constant cravings and preoccupation with eating. "What surprised me the most was how much mental space the food thoughts were taking up before, and how completely different it is when they quieten down," she said.
With that mental space cleared, Bond completely changed her lifestyle. Instead of restrictive dieting, she now cooks fresh recipes and focuses on protein, fiber, and moderation.
She also visits the gym two to three times a week and carries workout equipment with her. While she experienced initial side effects like extreme thirst and feeling "bone-chillingly cold," they quickly settled.
Now engaged and planning her wedding for next year, Bond says the weight loss has restored the confidence that previously caused her to avoid family visits and social gatherings.
She notes that the medication was simply a tool that allowed her to put in the hard work herself.
"I think there’s misunderstanding that [the medication] does all of the work, but for me, it’s the support I needed to gain control alongside real changes in food choices, routine and mindset," Bond said.
"It still requires effort, lots of learning and new routines."
