The Peterborough Private Hire Association has issued an urgent plea to its drivers to stop pulling over on the city’s Town Bridge following a wave of safety complaints from the public, local businesses, and motorists.
The bridge has reportedly become a hotspot for private hire vehicles stopping to collect passengers, particularly late-night crowds leaving the nearby Charters Bar.
Local residents have warned that the practice is causing severe traffic disruption, blocking the view of approaching motorists, and drastically increasing the risk of serious road accidents.
In a direct bid to curb the dangerous trend and ease congestion, the association has urged all taxi operators and drivers to prioritise safety over convenience by shifting their pick-up and drop-off points away from the main road.
"To improve safety and traffic flow, we strongly ask all drivers and operators to use the lower car park at Charters for pick-ups and drop-offs wherever possible," a spokesperson for the Peterborough Private Hire Association said. "This designated area is far safer and helps reduce disruption for everyone."
The association emphasised that adhering to these guidelines is vital for maintaining the professional image of the city's taxi industry.
The spokesperson added: "While convenience is important, safety and professionalism must always come first. Using the lower car park shows a commitment to responsible driving and helps maintain the strong reputation of Peterborough’s licensed trade.
"By cooperating and showing consideration for others, we can address these concerns and continue to promote a positive image of our industry."
