A young cabbie was left with life-changing injuries, including a fractured skull, a broken nose, and a brain haemorrhage, after passenger Brodie Farrell launched a brutal, unprovoked assault and abandoned him unconscious in the road.
Farrell, 26, of Colchester, boarded the taxi in the city centre before violently attacking the driver upon arriving at his destination in Highwoods.
During the onslaught, Farrell repeatedly punched and kicked the driver, dragging him from the vehicle and continuing the beating on the tarmac before fleeing the scene with the driver's phone and cash.
The victim, a father of young children, was found by a passing motorist who called emergency services. The driver was rushed to the hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery for a bleed on the brain. He spent weeks in intensive care and continues to suffer from severe cognitive impairment, memory loss, and physical disability.
Farrell was arrested days later after police traced his movements through local CCTV and DNA evidence left in the taxi.
During his trial, the prosecution described the assault as "an act of sheer, gratuitous brutality against a vulnerable worker."
Detective Inspector Antony Alcock condemned Farrell's actions, stating: "This was a senseless and extraordinarily violent attack on an innocent man who was simply trying to earn a living. Farrell showed a complete disregard for human life, leaving his victim severely injured in the dark."
At court, Farrell pleaded guilty to grievous bodily harm with intent and robbery.
A judge sentenced him to nine and a half years in prison, noting that the "savage and cowardly" attack had devastated the victim's life and left deep physical and psychological scars.
