SHEFFIELD RAILWAY STATION ROAD CHAOS PROMPTS TRIAL BAN ON PRIVATE DROP-OFFS
Sheffield City Council is set to trial a major change to the road layout outside the city’s railway station in a bid to alleviate “heavy congestion” and resolve longstanding conflicts between taxis and private vehicles.
From mid-January, the council will implement temporary measures to stop private cars from using the existing drop-off area directly outside the station.
This space will be exclusively freed up for taxis helping to overcome complaints about access to the site, with short-term parking bays for private cars to be created on Cross Turner Street.
The move comes as the council seeks to address severe issues at the transport hub. The council stated: "There are a series of issues of traffic congestion, conflicts between taxis and private drop off, poor air quality and severance of neighbouring communities which need to be addressed."
Council officers detailed the plan, which involves removing private vehicles from the station forecourt (which is private land) to improve traffic flow.
A report noted: "Council highways management have designed and tested a new layout which demonstrates improvements to the flow of traffic at the station and minimises the impact on the wider network."
The temporary changes will be closely monitored over an 18-month trial period using an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order. Data collected will "be used to support and inform implementation of the final scheme."
The announcement follows recent public criticism from South Yorkshire Mayor Oliver Coppard, who labelled the current road layout “ridiculous.”
Coppard said: "When I was a kid the station worked perfectly, then they changed it around. They improved the station massively but the way you come around that corner to the station is ridiculous. It's just a mess, so we have to get that sorted."
The council’s transport committee is scheduled to consider the full report at a meeting on December 17.
