CHRISTMAS SAFETY ALERT: EAST RIDING COUNCIL WARNS OF BOGUS TAXI DRIVERS

East Riding of Yorkshire Council is issuing a stark warning to residents to "beware of 'bogus taxi drivers'" this festive season, as its licensing team steps up efforts to ensure public safety over Christmas and New Year.

The council has noted an annual rise in reports of "bogus vehicles purporting to be lawful taxi services" during the holiday period. These unlicensed drivers and vehicles pose a risk as they "have not been vetted or checked and are often illegally offered through social media," the council explained.

Residents are being strongly urged to plan their journeys and "only use legally licensed taxis." All users must confirm their ride is a licensed service or private hire car before setting off.

To bolster safety, all East Riding licensed vehicles are now fitted with new and updated CCTV systems covering the internal area and a forward-facing dashcam. Crucially, these systems include an audio recording facility that "can be activated by passengers, or the driver, should any party feel at risk."

The council’s licensing team will also deploy visible taxi marshals in Beverley Saturday Market on December 18th, 19th, and New Year’s Eve to help ensure safe passage home.

A spokesperson for East Riding of Yorkshire Council stressed the importance of following licensing rules, particularly regarding vehicles from outside the area: "Residents who have not pre-booked their journey home from anywhere in the East Riding should be aware that any vehicle they flag down or approach for immediate hire must be an East Riding licensed Hackney Carriage.

"Vehicles from outside the East Riding cannot lawfully collect customers for immediate hire, and doing this may invalidate their insurance and put customers at risk."
