IPSWICH CABBIE'S LICENCE SUSPENDED AFTER MISSING MANDATORY HEALTH CHECK

An Ipswich hackney carriage driver was pulled off the road just two days before Christmas after failing to provide essential medical documentation to the local authority.

Ipswich Borough Council confirmed the immediate suspension of the driver’s licence on December 23, citing a failure to meet the strict safety requirements set out in the "Taxi and Private Hire Policy."

Under the council's regulations, all licensed drivers must maintain an "active medical" to ensure they are fit to operate a public vehicle.

This rigorous examination evaluates a driver’s "cardiovascular, musculoskeletal, neurological and psychiatric conditions" to ensure they meet the national DVLA Group 2 medical standards.

The suspension was enacted by the Head of Public Protection following a consultation with the Chair of the Regulatory and Licensing Committee.

Official council documents noted that "no alternative options were considered" during the decision-making process, highlighting the mandatory nature of the health assessment.

The driver, who is responsible for all GP costs associated with the check, will remain suspended until a medical practitioner can officially "confirm that the applicant meets the DVLA Group 2 medical standards."

No specific end date for the suspension has been provided.
