St Helens enforcement officers working with local police officers recently carried out a stop-and-check operation on taxi and private hire vehicles in St Helens town centre.
The operation focused on checking vehicle condition, driver and vehicle licences, and identifying non-compliance across the trade.
Checks were carried out on drivers and vehicles licensed by St Helens Council and also those licensed by other local authorities.
Council officers said the main aim was to protect residents and visitors using taxis and PHVs in the borough, while also gathering intelligence around cross-border working.
Although St Helens Council has no authority to take action against any out-of-area drivers or vehicles found to be non-compliant they would be reported to their own licensing authority for further action.
The enforcement activity forms part of the wider Safe Nights, Great Places campaign, designed to support a safe and well-managed night-time economy.
Councillor Trisha Long said;
“ These checks alongside our Safe Nights Great Places Campaign sends a clear message that the safety of our residents and visitors - particularly woman and girls - remains a top priority
“ I also want to recognise the professionalism and support shown by our local licensed taxi trade, who consistently work
with us to maintain high standards and help people get where they are going safely.”
