WATFORD UNVEILS PROPOSED TAXI FARE OVERHAUL: PUBLIC CONSULTATION NOW OPEN

Residents and commuters are being invited to have their say on a new "Hackney Carriage Table of Fares" as Watford Borough Council moves to update taxi tariffs for 2026.

Under the "Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976," the council has issued a formal notice of its intent to vary the charges for licensed black cabs across the borough. The proposal outlines a structured pricing system based on the time of day and the number of passengers.

The new table introduces four distinct tiers to replace or update the existing fare structure:

  • Standard Daytime (Tariff 1): For 1–5 passengers between 06:00 and 23:00, starting at "£2.90" for the first 109.7 metres.

  • Late Night & Holidays (Tariff 2): Covers 23:00 to 06:00, with faster increments of 20p for every 43 metres initially.

  • Large Vehicles (Tariffs 3 & 4): Groups of 6 or more passengers will see a higher minimum start rate of "£4.00."

The council also clarified that premium rates remain in effect for the festive period. "Drivers will charge double the fare shown on the meter on 24 and 31 December after 23:00, and on 25 December and 1 January each year."

The proposal maintains strict rules regarding vehicle upkeep and external costs. Passengers should be aware that:

  • "The driver may impose a soiling fee of £80 for a taxi that requires cleaning."

  • Passengers remain liable for all motorway tolls, congestion charges, and crossing fees.

  • The council reminds the public that "by agreeing to hire this taxi you are entering into a legally binding contract with the driver."

The consultation period is currently active, and the council is seeking feedback from the community before the changes are codified.

Any person may object by writing to licensing@watford.gov.uk (or Licensing, Town Hall, Watford WD17 3EX) or via surveymonkey.com/r/taxi-tariff-wbc

The deadline for all comments and objections is 12 noon on 30 January 2026.

Full details of the proposed table are available for inspection at the Watford Town Hall or via the council's digital feedback portal.
