In a bid to bolster the local economy and improve transport accessibility, Lancaster City Council has announced a series of fully funded training courses for aspiring taxi drivers.
The initiative, supported by government funding, allows residents to enter the profession without the burden of course fees. Training is being delivered at Lancaster and Morecambe College, with several sessions scheduled throughout February to address a growing shortage of licensed drivers across the district.
Council officials are highlighting the career flexibility that taxi driving offers, noting that candidates do not even need to own their own vehicle to begin the process.
“Taxi driving can be a flexible and rewarding career, giving you the opportunity to work independently while providing an essential service to your local community,” a council spokesperson said.
“As a licensed taxi driver, you can be your own boss; choose the hours you work to fit around other commitments and benefit from consistent demand and guaranteed work across the district.”
The council also emphasised that increasing the number of drivers is a strategic move to support the region's infrastructure. More drivers on the road are expected to reduce wait times and support the hospitality sector, particularly during peak hours.
The spokesperson added that the recruitment drive is vital for:
Improving access for residents, visitors, and businesses.
Supporting vulnerable groups, including older people and disabled passengers.
Aiding the night-time economy and shift workers.
While the entry barrier has been lowered financially, the council maintains that standards remain high. The curriculum is designed to ensure all new drivers are fully prepared for the responsibilities of the job. “The course covers essential knowledge, safety and safeguarding, helping you start your career with confidence while maintaining high standards for public safety.”
There are limited places remaining on the next course, taking place on January 30.
Courses are also being run on February 12, February 18 and February 27.
