TAXI FACES LICENCE REVIEW AFTER INSPECTORS DISCOVER DANGEROUS SUSPENSION DEFECT IN REDDITCH

A taxi is facing a licence review after safety inspectors discovered a heavily corroded suspension component at risk of imminent failure during a major compliance operation in Redditch.

West Mercia Police teamed up with Worcestershire Regulatory Services and licensing officers from Wolverhampton City Council for the operation on the evening of Friday 25 September, to examine taxis and private hire vehicles.

Around 40 licensed vehicles were checked to ensure they were safe, legal, and fit to carry passengers, highlighting how vehicles licensed by out-of-area authorities such as Wolverhampton regularly operate in other parts of the country.

During the checks, 20 Redditch-licensed vehicles were stopped, with police reporting that compliance was generally very good.

While nine were selected for further mechanical inspections and eight were found to be well maintained, inspectors identified severe safety defects on one vehicle, including the dangerously corroded suspension part. Consequently, that vehicle's licence will now face a review.

Additionally, around 20 Wolverhampton City Council-licensed vehicles were checked during the operation, resulting in one driver being caught with an expired vehicle licence.

Police stated that appropriate action will be taken by Wolverhampton City Council, and officers confirmed that similar joint compliance operations will be held again in the near future to maintain public safety.
