BRIT ARRESTED AFTER SEVILLE CABBIE STABBED 16 TIMES DRIVES TO POLICE STATION

A British passenger has been arrested in Seville after allegedly stabbing a local cabbie 16 times in a brutal knife assault, sparking fresh safety demands from the city's taxi trade.

The horror attack unfolded at around 2am at an industrial estate. The unnamed British suspect initially asked to go to the Los Arcos shopping centre before changing the destination to the industrial area.

Suspicious of his passenger's intentions, the cabbie refused to go any further. The suspect reacted with a knife frenzy, lasting several minutes, inflicting wounds to the driver's hands, arms, neck and shoulder so violent that the knife handle snapped off inside the cab.

Covered in blood, the wounded cabbie managed to drive his taxi to a local police station. An officer gave immediate first aid at the desk before paramedics arrived and rushed the driver to hospital. His life is not understood to be in danger.

Police tracked down the suspect nearby after he attempted to ditch the weapon, recovering the blade and the snapped handle left inside the vehicle. The suspect put up "strong resistance" during his arrest and is expected to face an attempted murder charge before a judge.

It was not immediately clear if he was on holiday in Seville or lived in the area.

Seville mayor Jose Luis Sanz posted on X: “Thanks to our great local police for providing crucial assistance to this injured taxi driver, an act that I strongly condemn.

"My support goes to the dear taxi driver, whose professionalism and skill in those moments I applaud. A hug, likewise, to all his colleagues in the profession.”

The violence has united local taxi drivers in anger over night-time security. The Sevillian Taxi Union slammed the shortage of police protection, warning the City Council that current staffing levels put working cabbies at severe risk and are "even more evident during nighttime hours".
