GWYNEDD COUNCIL APPROVES TAXI FARE INCREASES STARTING OCTOBER

Taxi fares across Gwynedd are set to rise from October 1, 2026, after Cyngor Gwynedd's general licensing committee formally approved the changes on Monday, September 21.

Following a public consultation that received zero objections, hackney carriage taxi operators will be permitted to charge higher maximum rates to help offset mounting business expenses.

Under the new structure, the maximum fare for a standard one-mile journey will increase from £3.60 to £4.00, aligning the region with several neighbouring councils.

Additionally, the operational hours for the late-night tariff will be expanded significantly, starting at 10pm rather than midnight, and running until 7am.

While these late-night hours are extending, the premium charged during this window will drop slightly, moving from 60% above the basic rate back down to 50%.

The council stated that maximum fares had remained frozen since 2022. The adjustments come "in response to increased operating costs faced by the taxi industry, while also seeking to strike a fair balance between affordability for passengers and the need for operators to run sustainable businesses."

Local authorities pointed to a series of financial pressures impacting small and medium-sized transport businesses. These include rising national insurance contributions, higher minimum salary rates, surging vehicle insurance expenses, and regular licensing fees for both drivers and vehicles.

Furthermore, council reports highlighted that "the country's economic situation over the last few months has seen a significant increase in fuel costs, particularly diesel due to the war in Iran," with projections indicating that fuel prices will remain high for the foreseeable future.
