A Grantham taxi driver who taught himself how to code has launched a free online football game just in time for the World Cup.
Pawel Tokarzewski, a 36-year-old Polish native who moved to the Lincolnshire town nearly a decade ago, spent over a year developing Footy Legends Quiz. The browser-based game allows users to build their ultimate England starting XI and uncovers the unique story behind their selected squad.
The idea was sparked by a simple guessing game Tokarzewski used to play with friends.
Despite having zero background in game design or programming, he utilised HTML, JavaScript, and AI-assisted coding to bring his vision to life. The process was not without its challenges.
"At first, it was hard to get to grips with things, because the AI couldn’t quite grasp what I was actually trying to do," Tokarzewski said.
However, as the technology improved, he was able to successfully programme the gameplay, logic, and visual effects.
Building the game required intense dedication. Tokarzewski spent months meticulously constructing a database of more than 800 English footballers dating from 1960 to the present day, tracking down their specific positions, clubs, and career statistics.
"It was painstaking work, but I think the end result should be satisfying," he noted.
An avid football fan who regularly plays the sport, Tokarzewski loves the high-pressing, fast-paced nature of English football, though he prefers watching an action-packed match over supporting any single team. Now, he is promoting his creation by placing QR codes on the headrests of his taxi for passengers to scan.
He also has ambitious plans to expand the project into a pub-friendly team version called XI After Dark.
Reflecting on his journey from warehouse worker to game creator, Tokarzewski said: "It’s amazing because I get to share my passion with people who live and breathe football, a sport that originated in England."
