The countdown is officially on as Troon prepares to welcome hundreds of very special visitors for the 79th annual Glasgow Taxi drivers' outing on Wednesday, June 17.
The beloved event will see a colourful convoy of more than 125 taxis transport around 300 children with additional support needs from various city schools for an unforgettable day at the beach.
Since 1945, thousands of generous drivers have volunteered their time for free, with most dressing up in fancy dress costumes to the delight of the children and onlookers.
However, the 2026 trip will look a little different as it takes a brand-new route out of Glasgow. Due to ongoing city centre disruption, including closures around George Square and the aftermath of the Union Street fire earlier this year, organisers had to find an alternative path.
Stephen Lalley of the Glasgow Taxi Outing Fund charity explained: "This year, the taxis will travel along Sauchiehall Street towards Charing Cross before turning right on to Newton Street and joining the motorway to Troon."
He noted that while this is currently the most practical option, they hope the measures will be temporary and that they can return to the traditional route next year. Lalley added his thanks to the local council and police for ensuring the children can still "enjoy this special day which produces a lifetime of memories."
Despite the route changes, the destination is more than ready to celebrate. Troon Community Council shared that the town is eagerly looking forward to the influx of visitors, noting:“This event gives so many young people with special needs a chance to have a day out at the seaside.”
Locals always go the extra mile to make the day magical, from school children lining the streets to knitters creating custom covers for the seaside bollards.
Once the convoy arrives, the children will enjoy an afternoon of music, entertainment, and beach games, supported by major sponsors like Glasgow Taxis Ltd, Celtic FC Foundation, and several local businesses.
As the seven-day countdown began this morning with a visit to pupils at Hazelwood Primary School, the Glasgow Taxi Outing Fund extended an invitation for everyone to "Join the Glasgow Taxi Outing Fund in celebrating 79 years ‘Goin’ tae Troon.’"
