UBER SECURES OFFICIAL LICENCE TO OPERATE IN LINCOLN
Uber has officially been granted an operator’s licence by the City of Lincoln Council, a move that officials say will finally give them the power to regulate the ride-hailing giant locally.
The decision follows growing frustration over out-of-town drivers working in the city under licences issued by other authorities, such as Wolverhampton.
Simon Colburn, assistant director for health and environmental services at the council, explained that because Uber met all legal requirements, the authority was "legally required to issue a licence."
He noted that this change is a win for local oversight, as it allows the council to "manage complaints, enforce safety standards and protect passengers" while maintaining control over drivers licensed specifically by the city.
The arrival of Uber has previously sparked debate among local licensed drivers, who argued that app-based competitors had not "jumped through the same hoops" as traditional cabbies.
However, Uber suggests the move will be a boost for the local economy, with a spokesperson stating: "We see strong demand for Uber in Lincoln."
The company added that their launch will provide "new earning opportunities for local drivers," highlighting that those on the platform have access to holiday pay, pensions, and union representation.
Some drivers are already preparing for the shift. One self-employed driver, Adam, told the BBC he plans to switch his plates and badges over to Lincoln as soon as his current out-of-town licence expires this summer.
As Uber finalises its launch plans, the council insists that having the company under its direct supervision is the best way to ensure a level playing field and passenger safety.
