A drunken passenger who threatened to strangle a Leeds cabbie before fleeing with his mobile phone has been spared a jail sentence, despite leaving his victim too traumatised to continue working in the UK.
Dean Johnson, 37, was travelling with two friends on July 27, 2024, when a dispute erupted over his drinking inside the vehicle. After being told by the driver, Mr. Hussain, that the journey would end unless he stopped, Johnson became aggressive.
The court heard that Johnson "threatened to strangle Mr. Hussain" during the journey to Harehills. While he briefly calmed down, the situation escalated upon arrival.
Johnson then grabbed a bag of cash and a £150 mobile phone from the dashboard before fleeing on foot.
Defence counsel Anatasis Tasou stated that Johnson - who has a history of robbery and burglary - stole the device to "feed his cocaine addiction," eventually selling the £150 phone for just £30.
The impact of the "unplanned snatching" extended far beyond the financial loss. In a victim statement, Mr. Hussain described himself as "mentally and emotionally drained."
The ordeal left him so fearful of picking up male passengers that he and his wife have since left the country and returned to Pakistan.
Judge Howard Crowson characterised the theft not as a premeditated robbery, but as an “unplanned snatching” and an “act of spite by an angry passenger.”
Despite Johnson’s previous convictions for theft, robbery and burglary, plus the severity of the threats, the judge opted to fine Johnson £150, plus a surcharge, to be paid by May 16 2026.
Johnson is currently serving time at HMP Wealstun for an unrelated offence and is scheduled for release this April.
