Dundee taxi passengers could face higher travel costs as the local authority’s licensing committee meets this Thursday to discuss a proposed 4.62% increase in hire charges.
If approved, the new pricing structure would take effect on April 1, marking the second fare hike in less than two years. The move follows a significant nearly 13% increase that was implemented in December 2024.
Under the new recommendations, the flag fall for a standard daytime trip (Tariff 1) would rise from £4.20 to £4.40, with subsequent mileage also seeing a marginal increase. Evening and festive rates would see similar adjustments:
Tariff 2 (Weekday evenings): Rising from £4.62 to £4.84.
Tariff 3 (Weekend evenings): Rising from £5.04 to £5.28.
Tariff 4 (Festive period): Rising from £5.88 to £6.16.
The proposal has met resistance from within the trade. Some operators are urging the council to scrap the price hike in favour of "harmonising" rules with neighbouring Angus Council.
In a formal submission to the licensing board, the director of eTaxi argued that maintaining current prices while aligning operating times with Angus would be more beneficial for the city. “We believe this adjustment would offer several benefits... passengers will continue to receive a fair and consistent service without facing increased travel costs,” the director stated.
The operator further suggested that aligning with Angus would provide “a more balanced and practical structure for drivers” and create “greater uniformity for both customers and drivers who frequently travel between the two council areas.”
Councillors will weigh these concerns against the official report's recommendations during Thursday's session before a final decision is reached.
