
Community leaders are sounding the alarm over a dangerous spike in attacks on taxi drivers across Stoke-on-Trent, reporting that vehicles are being targeted "on a regular basis."
City councillors Faisal Hussain, Sadaqat Maqsoom, and Tabrase Din have approached the local authority with "serious concerns" after a string of incidents where licensed cars have been "deliberately damaged" and "smashed."
The violence has escalated to terrifying levels, including a recent incident in Tunstall where armed police were called after a pellet gun was fired at a taxi in a supermarket car park.
The driver was "left shaken" by the assault. In another case, images circulated online showing a vehicle with its windows shattered in Cobridge.
In a formal letter to the council, the councillors argued that the mandatory "livery" is making drivers sitting ducks.
They have requested that the council allow the removal of these stickers to help drivers blend in and avoid being singled out.
"We believe this requirement may make vehicles more easily identifiable and therefore more vulnerable to damage," the letter stated.
The councillors are now pushing for a formal safety plan and better cooperation with Staffordshire Police to protect those providing an "essential service to the public."
Highlighting the impact on local workers, the leaders stressed that "our drivers deserve to feel safe at work" and need reassurance that their livelihoods are not at constant risk.
