A multi-agency taxi enforcement operation in Barnsley, focused primarily on "out of town" drivers and vehicles, resulted in eight compliance notices being issued.
The operation was a joint effort between Barnsley Council enforcement officers, South Yorkshire Police, and teams from neighbouring authorities, including Wolverhampton, Kirklees, Sheffield, and Leeds.
The checks aimed to address concerns about varying compliance standards among drivers licensed by other local authorities who are operating within the borough.
A council spokesperson emphasised the ongoing commitment to safety, stating: “We’re continuing our work to improve safety and standards across Barnsley’s taxi and private hire sector, with a recent taxi enforcement operation and the installation of our CCTV pilot scheme in licensed vehicles.”
Of the 55 vehicles and drivers stopped and checked, ten were licensed by Barnsley, with the remaining 45 being external. Eight drivers overall received compliance notices.
The enforcement operation comes alongside the completion of the installation phase for a new CCTV pilot scheme in hackney carriage vehicles, funded by the South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority’s Transport Innovation Fund. The council now plans to extend this offer to private hire vehicles used for home-to-school transport.
The council spokesperson noted the dual benefits of the camera scheme: “Providing CCTV not only reassures passengers but also gives drivers increased protection when working, and helps to uphold high standards across the sector.”
Councillor Wendy Cain, Cabinet Spokesperson for Public Health and Communities, strongly backed the initiatives: “Keeping people safe is at the heart of what we do, and these two pieces of work show our ongoing commitment to maintaining high standards across Barnsley’s taxi and private hire sector.
"By strengthening our policies and continuing to work closely with our partners, we’re making sure Barnsley remains a safe place for both passengers and drivers of licensed vehicles.”
