Uber is embarking on a significant shift towards large-scale automation, announcing a major partnership with Nvidia to build and operate a massive fleet of 100,000 autonomous vehicles by 2027.
The move signals potential tough competition for human drivers who have historically formed the backbone of the ride-hailing giant.
The collaboration, unveiled at Nvidia’s GTC conference, aims to make robotaxis a mainstream option on the Uber platform.
The expansion will begin in 2027, relying on Nvidia’s latest AI systems, including the newly launched Nvidia Drive AGX Hyperion 10 platform. This builds on an existing data-sharing deal struck earlier this year.
Stellantis NV, the automaker behind Jeep and Peugeot, will be among the first to supply at least 5,000 Nvidia-powered robotaxis for Uber’s fleet across the U.S. and select international markets, with production beginning by 2028.
Foxconn will assist with systems integration. Uber will manage all aspects of deployment, including remote assistance, charging, cleaning, and maintenance.
For Uber, the shift offers dramatic long-term benefits, as robotaxis could “dramatically reduce operational costs” and give the company more control over the rider experience.
The 100,000-vehicle target includes existing commitments, such as the 20,000 Lucid Gravity and Nuro cars, and is expected to integrate vehicles from several developers including Waymo, May Mobility, and Pony.ai.
Beyond the vehicles, the alliance will create a “robotaxi data factory” where Uber plans to collect over three million hours of driving data to train and validate AI models.
Uber described the aim of the collaboration as creating: “a powerful data engine — spanning ingestion, labelling, scenario mining, synthetic data generation and large-scale training — that aims to shorten the path from pilot to profitable autonomy deployment.”
Pilot programmes and testing are expected to begin soon as the companies pave the way for the ambitious fleet goal by the end of the decade.
