TORBAY COUNCIL SUSPENDS FOUR TAXI LICENCES FOLLOWING DRIVING AND PARKING OFFENCES

Four local taxi drivers have faced disciplinary action from Torbay Council after councillors voted to suspend their licences following a series of motoring and parking offences.

Two of the drivers received three-month suspensions after each accumulating nine penalty points for speeding.

The first driver collected points for speeding in September 2023, failing to stop at traffic lights in May 2024 and speeding again in September 2025, while also failing to properly notify the council.

Councillors accepted their mitigation as "honest and credible", noting the offences were not deliberate, but expressed concern over a "pattern of repeated offending by a professional driver". This suspension can be shortened if the driver completes an advanced driving course.

The second speeding driver similarly amassed nine points between February 2024 and February 2026. Described as "open, honest and genuinely apologetic", this driver took full responsibility and has already installed a speed limiter in their vehicle.

They face the same three-month suspension term, which is also conditional on completing advanced training.

Meanwhile, two other drivers received one-month suspensions for parking issues related to taxi ranks. The third driver was caught on CCTV three times "over-ranking" outside a designated rank during a quiet period, which councillors deemed a "lack of professionalism".

The fourth driver was penalised for parking outside the designated rank on Vaughan Road in Torquay despite a prior warning.

Despite the suspensions, the regulatory sub-committee chose against revoking any of the four licences entirely.
