DNA MATCH LINKS LEEDS MAN TO RAPE AFTER VICTIM MISTOOK HIM FOR HER PRE BOOKED PHV DRIVER

A jury at Leeds Crown Court has heard how a woman was raped in 2021 after getting into a car she wrongly believed was the private hire vehicle she had ordered.

Rashid Kwabena Boachie, 44, is now on trial facing charges of rape, attempted rape, and sexual assault.

The prosecution alleges that the victim, who was intoxicated after a night out in Hunslet, entered Boachie’s car assuming it was the taxi she had ordered.

Boachie allegedly pulled into one car park but was disturbed, so drove to a "secluded place" off Middleton Grove, Middleton, where he put the seats down and raped her.

Afterwards, he drove her to where she had initially wanted to be dropped off.

Although DNA was recovered at the time, the "case went cold" because there was no match on the national database.

The investigation was reignited in August last year after Boachie was arrested following a second alleged incident in Leeds city centre.

In that case, a woman was led to an alleyway where the Crown says Boachie "tried to rape her" before being disturbed by a hotel employee.

CCTV footage played to the court from that evening showed Boachie appearing to lead the woman by the arm. She was intoxicated and even fell over at one point.

He then appeared to lift her to her feet and continue guiding her towards the secluded area behind a collection of industrial bins.

When disturbed by the staff member, Boachie appeared to calmly wander off “pretending nothing had happened.”

When his DNA was finally taken upon his arrest, it flagged as a match to the 2021 attack.

Boachie, of Bramley, Leeds denies all charges.

While he claims the 2021 encounter was consensual, prosecutor Stephen Littlewood told the jury: "It’s not a case of consent and she would not have been in any state to consent."

The prosecution argues that Boachie specifically "targeted these women" because of their drunken state.

The trial continues.
