BRADFORD UBER DRIVER TO PAY £1,640 FOR REFUSING PASSENGER WITH GUIDE DOG

An Uber driver has been fined by a court after he refused to transport a visually impaired passenger with her guide dog.

Yasar Rehman Butt, 48, of Bradford, appeared in Bradford Magistrates Court on Thursday, September 11, and admitted to the charge of "being a private hire vehicle operator who failed to accept a booking by a disabled person accompanied by an assistance dog."

The incident occurred on February 13 in Brighouse, when Butt was called to pick up the passenger. Upon seeing her guide dog, he "simply refused" to take them.

A video recorded by the complainant was shown in court, which depicted her explaining to Butt that it was illegal to refuse a guide dog.

Waseem Raja, prosecuting for Bradford Council, stated that Butt was "told numerous times he legally can’t refuse a person with a guide dog, and he just carries on refusing then drives away."

Mr Raja said: “He now accepts what he did was wrong. He says he is new as a taxi driver and didn’t know what the requirements were.

“He now takes it into account and knows what is required of him. He accepts he should have agreed to take the guide dog.”

Butt, who represented himself, claimed he was "confused" about company policy at the time.

Magistrates fined Butt £200, and he was also ordered to pay £1,360 in council costs and an £80 surcharge, bringing his total penalty to £1,640.
