CRAWLEY BOROUGH COUNCIL CONSIDERS CCTV AND PANIC BUTTONS FOR TAXIS AND PHVS

Crawley Borough Council is proposing significant safety upgrades for its licensed hackney carriages and private hire vehicles, including the mandatory installation of CCTV and panic buttons.

The council has launched a public consultation to gather feedback on these measures, alongside a review of taxi identification signage.

The proposed changes aim to bring Crawley's taxi licensing framework in line with "national best practices and statutory guidance, while addressing local concerns around safety."

If implemented, all licensed vehicles would be required to have CCTV systems capable of both audio and visual recording. Additionally, panic buttons for both drivers and passengers would be introduced, designed to "trigger recording in the event of an incident, offering an added layer of protection."

Councillor Yasmin Khan, cabinet member for public protection, emphasised the importance of these initiatives. "Public safety is at the heart of our licensing regime," Khan stated.

"We want everyone – whether they're a passenger, driver, or operator – to feel confident and secure when using or working in our licensed vehicles."

Khan added that "This consultation is an important step in ensuring our policies support public safety and reflect the needs of our community."

The consultation is open until August 11, and the council is encouraging all residents, drivers, and statutory bodies to participate.

Further details and the consultation portal can be found at crawley.gov.uk/council-information/how-council-works/consultation.
