TAXIS STOPPED BY SWANSEA POLICE TO ENSURE SAFETY OF PASSENGERS ALL PASS THE CHECKS
South Wales Roads Policing Unit officers spent part of their Wednesday night shift (11 May) checking the licences of taxi drivers working the Swansea beat.
They said the initiative is to ensure the safety of those enjoying the city's night-time economy.
WalesOnline reports that officers tweeted at 11.56pm on Wednesday: "Conducting pro-active stops on taxis, actively checking licences. To ensure the safety of those enjoying the night-time economy with confidence in the taxi drivers taking them home. "
At 12.34am on Thurdsay morning they updated: "So far four taxis have been checked and all compliant are fully licensed."
The police initiative is seen as an important step in getting more people to venture out following the Covid pandemic.
The night-time economy of major cities has struggled in the past two years and it is taking time to bring the numbers of people journeying into the city centre back up to the levels enjoyed in pre-pandemic days.
