In our continuing message from PHTM that “we are proud of our trade”, we announce the initiation of the inaugural “Parliamentary Taxi and Private Hire Driver Awards”.
Organised by leading member of the Transport Committee, Daniel Zeichner MP, the awards aim to bring the industry together to celebrate its drivers and inspire passengers.
Every Member of Parliament has an opportunity to nominate one driver from their local area and applications are coming in thick and fast, including from the Chancellor Sajid Javid.
The awards will celebrate taxi drivers who deserve some extra recognition – the friendliest taxi driver in town, people who have gone the extra mile to assist passengers, or who have organised local fundraising drives in the community.
Daniel Zeichner MP said: “I am really enjoying reading though all the entries so far. It is heart-warming to hear about cabbies going the extra mile. I want to shine a spotlight on what’s great about the industry.”
PHTM Editor Donna Short, who met Mr Zeichner at a recent Transport Committee hearing in connection with the Task and Finish group, spoke yesterday with Mr Zeichner, who told us that he’s “very happy” to announce the award scheme and spread the word through PHTM and our Facebook page.
The deadline for nominations is Tuesday 17 September and drivers should contact their local MP to request a nomination form.
The awards ceremony will take place at the House of Commons on Tuesday 15 October and will be attended by drivers, MPs, sector representatives and trade unions.
For further information please contact Daniel Zeichner MP on 07767 253060 or Alex Mayer in his office on 07834 456743.
