A taxi driver in China has been sacked after dashcam footage proved he had slept behind the wheel for more than a minute. The driver, named as He, had 40 winks whilst driving and was only woken up when his car crashed into roadworks in Shenzhen, Guangdong province. The terrifying close call happened during the early hours of Friday morning when there were very few cars on the road.
The People’s Daily reported He was the night taxi driver for Dragonair Taxis and had just finished a shift when he dozed off. Company bosses noticed the driver asleep in the in-car footage and immediately fired him.
He has also been placed on a blacklist to prevent him getting further work as a taxi driver. More than 200,000 people are killed on China’s dangerous roads every year, with 90,000 perishing due to fatigue or tiredness.
