A wrong turn by a Boro Taxis driver ended up with the car stuck on train tracks. And the gaffe meant trains packed with Boro fans were stranded.
“Our train stopped and the guard said there was a car on the track - he then started laughing and said ‘seriously, there is!’” passenger Andy Hodgson told Gazette Live.
He ventured outside with staff to inspect the car, which became stuck at Redcar Central.
“I suspect he should have turned left at the signal box. Clearly he has taken a wrong turn though.
“And to make it worse, he couldn’t just reverse back and get off so I suspect he probably had to wait for a tow truck.
“I was stuck for about five to ten minutes so I just rang my wife up and asked her to pick me up a stop early.”
The blunder meant the train - which was taking Boro fans back from the game against Cardiff City FC - had to terminate early.
And it wasn’t the only service impacted. “Two of our services were affected by the incident,” said a Northern Rail service.
These were the 6pm Darlington to Saltburn service, which Andy was on, while there were also issues with the 6.57pm Saltburn to Darlington service starting at the same station.
However, despite the delays Boro Taxis praised the driver for their quick thinking.
A spokesman said: “We understand this was an unusual accident for which no-one is to blame.
“The driver, who was in the car alone, immediately reported the situation to staff at the station in order to ensure public safety.
“It is reassuring to know that the training we provide our drivers helps to equip them to take appropriate action to safeguard the public, whatever the situation.”
