Police hunting illegal taxi operators in Newton Abbot have warned — 'we will catch and stop you'. Newton Abbot police have revealed they have recently received reports of illegal taxis operating in the town, picking up and transporting customers for money.
They are now stepping up their operation to catch those responsible and say they have already identified a couple of suspects.
A police spokesman said: “These illegal drivers are not vetted by the local authority, nor are they accredited to convey customers for money. More importantly, they are not insured.
“If an illegal taxi is involved in an accident while a customer is in the vehicle neither will be eligible for an insurance pay-out regardless of injuries. The driver's services could also be deemed as fraudulent."
The spokesman added: “Warning signs can be that there are no taxi logos/company names on the vehicle, no local authority license plate, no driver ID within the vehicle and that they have lower prices' than competitors or are touting for business."
PCSO Chris Hurden, who is part of the Newton Abbot neighbourhood policing team, said: “We have been looking into this and have been keeping an eye on the areas that are the most affected.
“We have had a lot of third hand reports from people about illegal taxis operating in the area, particularly on Saturday nights.
“We have already got a couple of names that we are looking at in relation to this. We will be continuing our patrols in the town centre. area and are making a note of vehicle registration in case anything suspicious is going on. What we are doing now is collecting the evidence we need and continuing our patrols.
“It is hard to say exactly how wide ranging these offences are as the nature of it is very intangible, but we have had reports on unlicensed cabs picking up fares around the town."
